Moonlight spilled through the high studio windows as Joanna shoved a faded camellia back into a dusty old box. Memories clung to that faded flower.

There was no escaping the truth any longer. Alexei Cameron had charged back into her life, kindling dangerous emotions. She remembered his hands, warm and effortlessly powerful. She remembered the texture of his mouth on hers.

Her heart slammed as she shoved the box back behind a row of books. As she did, moonlight played over her arms and wrists.

Silver skin. Silver light. Faint silver scars.

Shivering, she kicked off her sandals and padded through the tiny bedroom set high under the eaves. Clothing fell as she went. By the time Joanna reached her closet, she was wearing only sheer underwear. Frowning, she stopped and looked at herself in the cheval glass.

Moonlight dusted her shoulders and pooled over her cheeks. Were the scars visible too? Joanna wondered. Did the old pain lay clear for anyone to read?

She tugged open a drawer, angry when she saw her hands shake as she reached for her swimsuit. Cool lapping water would wash away the memory of Alex's lips. Hard exercise would tire her so she could sleep.

She tugged on the suit and padded silently down the back steps, then flipped on the lights to the lovely old pool set in flagstones down the hill. With a sigh, she eased into the cool depths and began to swim. With each stroke, the tug of the water lulled her to relax. She did not notice the figure that moved past the windows of the studio. Only at the pool's far edge did she see Alex cutting through the water toward her.

She frowned, trying not to watch the beads of water glide down his sculpted chest or the moonlight that painted streaks of silver against his long, wet hair. "What do you want, Alex?"

"We have some unfinished business."

She turned, her body rigid.

His eyes were sleek with flecks of moonlight. "You're running again, Joanna. It's time to tell me why you wanted me out of this." Around them the water lapped, soft and cool. "Tell me what you're afraid of."

Of you. Of myself , she wanted to scream. Of the things you make me feel and a past I've tried so damned hard to forget .

"Nothing."

"You're lying."

"What gives you the bloody right to"

His wet hands covered her cheeks. His eyes turned to silver. "This."

His mouth covered hers before Joanna had a chance to pull away. She froze, expecting him to punish and demand and possess.

But what he did was far more dangerous. His mouth softened, finessed, seduced. He drew fire, painted sweetness, coaxed a slow sigh.

"No, Alex."

He cradled her face. Waiting. Letting her see his need.

"It's finished. It has to be finished."

His hands were infinitely gentle. "It's just beginning."

Joanna shivered as he eased closer. She felt the slam of his heart. "II can't." She looked down at the fine lines at one wrist and swallowed, trying to turn away. "Just go."

"Not until you tell me what you're so damned afraid of.
